Pensioners Shutdown Asaba Govt House

Pensioners numbering over 500 stormed Delta State government house in protest over their unpaid pension from 2007 till date. The pensioners who shutdown government house activities started the protest from Labour House to house of Assembly then to Government House.

The pensioners were raining curses on the governor Ifeanyi Okowa who bluntly refused to pay them their pension. The retirees rejected chief of staff, government house Mr Tam Brisibe, Attorney general and commissioner for justice, Hon. Peter Mrakpo and Head of service, Reginald Bayoko, who came to address them on behalf of governor Okowa.

The retirees who were armed with placard with various descriptions; the blood of the dead contributory retirees are crying to God for vengers, Okowa your a small rate, Pharaoh of Delta state pay our harmonization, where is our bailout fund.

Others includes pay retirees their money 2010- 2011, Okowa what is crime of retirees after serving Delta state for 35 years, the wroth of God is upon you for punishing retirees, Delta state governor why are you killing retirees, no harmonization no second tenure, Okowa is heartless and wicked, stop apartheid policy in payment of retirees.

Speaking at the protest, the state chairman comrade Ajueitsi Ovwiroro said the former Uduaghan said in 2014 the government had contributed over 18 billion to the contributory pension scheme with workers contributory 13 billion, saying that the retirees were not still pay till date.

Comrade Ovwiroro said the contributory pension scheme was a monumental failure in Delta state as it has persistently flaunted the rules of the scheme.

According to him, Okowa has refuse to pay the mandatory 5% of the monthly wage bill of its employees into the retirement benefit bound redemption fund account with central bank of Nigeria to date as stipulated by the pension, law 2008, thereby causing untold hardship to the generality of the contributory retirees.

He stated the way forward as the issuance of irrevocable standing payment order (IPO) by Okowa to accountant general of the federal for dedication of 500 million monthly from the state revenue allocation from the federal account until the whole debt is liquidated.
