Ika Weekly Wins N50 Million Law Suit

Ika Weekly newspaper has won a N50 million law suit filed against it in 2012 at the Federal High court, Agbor, by the immediate past chairman of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Ika South branch, Comrade Amechi Igunmbor. Ika Weekly was joined in the suit as second defendant, while the first defendant was Hon. Nick Owah, former Peoples Democratic Party’s publicity secretary in Ika South Local Government Area.
Comrade Igumbor included Ika Weekly and its editor, Augustine Ekamagule in the suit because, according him, it published a libelous report on him through an interview granted it by Hon. Owa. Although Comrade Igumbor’s name was not mentioned in the said publication, he alleged that his image and character were maligned and defamed by it.
Delivering his judgment on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 Hon. Justice D.C Maidoh of the Agbor High Court dismissed the case for lack of merit.
Reacting, Counsel to Ika Weekly, and principal partner, J.K. Agholor Associates, Comrade Ifeanyi Agholor Esq, commended the judgment, describing it as a good one.
On his part, the publisher, Ika Weekly newspaper, Mr. Steve Ekiri- Mekiriwa Ashien, while reacting to the judgment expressed gratitude to the Almighty God for the victory, He thanked Comrade Agholor for a job well done and also for the selfless service he has been rendering to Ika Weekly newspaper over the years.
