Delta Election Tribunal Receives 40 petitions, But Ochei Buries the Hatchet

The Delta election tribunal has received a total of 40 petitions, challenging the outcome of the 2015 general elections. 3 petitions are challenging the election of the state governor-elect, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, one is challenging the election of Senator James Manager, Delta South, 7 petitions were received for the House of Representatives election and 29 for the State House of Assembly election.

The Secretary to the Tribunal, Mr Al’Sadiq Abubakar, told our source that all the petitions were received at the tribunals between April 17 and May 3. We understand that the tribunals, which is made up of a chairman and two members each, will commence sitting soon.

The big news is that Rt. Hon Victor Ochei has decided to bury the hatchet and back down from contesting the senatorial election results that were allegedly rigged to favour his opponent, Barrister Peter Nwaoboshi of People’s Democratic Party.

Xclusive Magazine had reported on 14 April 2015 that Ochei was set to challenge the Delta North Senatorial Results in Court. A source inside Ochei’s team had told us authoritatively then that Ochei had gathered mountain of documented evidence: illegal thumb printing; snatching of ballot boxes; and results falsification carried out by the agents of his opponent, to nail Nwaoboshi and that he was ready to go for broke to reclaim his stolen mandate at the tribunal.

“Every Delta Northerner knows that the election was massively rigged by PDP to Nwaoboshi’s favour. So there is this sense among Ochei’s supporters that their principal was robbed, and that Nwaoboshi’s purported victory is a stolen mandate that must be reclaimed,” the reliable source had said.

A source at the top echelon of Ochei’s campaign team told Xclusive Magazine that Ochei “is not going to the tribunal based on reasons that are personal to him.” But the source then refused to venture further information despite intense pressure from us as to what those “personal reasons” are. We, however, gathered from an independent reliable source that Ochei decided to bury the hatchet after several pressure from the Delta governor-elect Dr Ifeanyi Okowa in which he appealed to Ochei’s sense of “Anioma interests, sentiments and aspiration.” Apparently, Ochei bought into Okowa’s argument and appeal.

Despite the absence of the much anticipated Ochei versus Nwaoboshi explosives, the Delta elections 2015 tribunal will still not be short of intense fireworks. But the Battle Royale will not come from the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal that will sit at High Court 3, nor from the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal at High Court 5, but from the State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal also at High Court 5.

The two Delta State House of Assembly candidates, Barrister Pat Princess Ajudua of PDP and Chief Tony Uche Azuya of APGA, both from Ibusa, will catch the eye of the world when the Tribunal begins sitting. Chief Azuya is claiming that the results were massively rigged by Princess Ajudua, wife of Barrister Fred Chijindu Ajudua, in collusion with the State INEC Returning officer.

What will make the fight very bitter and more intense will be another of their battle that will take place somewhere else. Azuya is not only contesting the results of the Oshimili North House of Assembly elections results, but also petitioning against Princess Ajudua to the Inspector General of Police for the “gruesome killing” of one Mr Emeka Onianwa to whom Chief Azuya was “a mentor and custodian.”

In the petition to the Inspector General of Police, signed by his lawyer, Femi Okafor Esq of Ezeadiefe Chambers, Chief Azuya is demanding that “those who killed the young man, whose expectant wife has just been delivered of a baby boy almost a week after Mr. Emeka Onianwa died from the wounds he received from his captors, are held accountable and brought to justice.”

The petition, which gives reasonable detail “of the barbaric, horrific and gruesome nature of the assault and battery” on Mr. Onianwa, also describes Ibusa as “a nerve centre for unprovoked attacks, abduction, kidnapping, even ritual killings.”
