Azuya Joins APC Despite Overtures from PDP, Formal Declaration in December

Chief Tony Azuya of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is set to join All Progressives Congress (APC) and will contest the 2019 State House of Assembly elections for Oshimili North Local Government under the APC platform, XCLUSIVE MAGAZINE can authoritatively report.

We gathered from very reliable political insiders that this is a done deal and barring any last minute shift in date, Azuya’s formal declaration for the APC has been slated for December.

The news will come to Delta State People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as a hammer blow and great disappointment. A source very close to Azuya, who asked not be named because he has no authority to discuss this, told XCLUSIVE MAGAZINE that influential members of PDP in Delta North including Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi and House of Representative member Mrs Joan Onyemaechi Mrakpor have been making frantic efforts to lure Chief Azuya to their party.

The source explained that it was very easy for Azuya to spurn their overtures because PDP is generally regarded as a party that takes people for a ride. “Look at Emma Chinye from Onicha Olona, who was lured from APC to PDP with the assurance that he would get the party ticket to contest Chairmanship elections. However, during the PDP Chairmanship primaries, he was asked by Gov. Okowa to step down for the other aspirant, again with a promise that he would be compensated with a political appointment which will not be fullfiled,” said the source.

Azuya’s move to APC will also send jitters to Pat Ajudua’s camp. This is because Mrs Ajudua, whose over ten years in the House of Assembly has been characterised by massive looting and underdevelopment of the Local Government, is becoming increasingly unpopular with the people of Oshimili North. And Azuya in a well-oiled party as APC will offer them a credible alternative and the hope of a better representation in the State House of Assembly in 2019.

Azuya’s defection to APC, when formally announced in December, would put paid to the ongoing intense debate within the political circles in Delta Oshimili North about which political party the security czar will contest the 2019 Delta State House of Assembly elections.

Text messages sent to Chief Azuya for comment on whether he was set to declare for APC have so far not been responded to.
